UKR/ENG

Dear brothers and sisters! Ladies and gentlemen, a respectful audience!

This morning, while we were having breakfast, Russia again fired at several cities in Ukraine. Blood was spilled again, there are the injured and the dead again.

Therefore, for me freedom is not only a generalized theological, legal or philosophical concept. Freedom is for what Ukrainian people pay an enormous price every day.

The same price was paid by the British people for their freedom over eighty years ago. Then there were dark times for the British when all the power of Nazi tyranny fought against them. But the people of Britain, togetherwith others, who valued freedom, won. I also believe in victory for Ukraine. Because the truth is with us. And where the truth is – there is God and victory.

In this part of our meeting, we have focused on how violations of religious freedom may be a signal of aggravation in the overall state of human rights.

I would like to remind the audience that in Russia, more than ten years ago, after a certain period of relative religious freedom, they gradually implemented variousrestrictions at the legislative level. Let me mention the so-called “Yarovaia Law”, according to which any religious activity requires permission from the state. In fact, under the current Kremlin regime, a system of control over religious activities, that existed in the Soviet Union, was restored. Only now, instead of combating religion – is it used as a tool for spreading the ideology of the “russkiy mir – Russian world”.

Russia tries to present itself as a defender of traditional religious values. Yet, restricting the freedom of religion, using religious organizations, as the tool of totalitarian policy, Russian authorities do not protect religious values, but discredit them.

The example of the temporarily occupied territories of Ukraine clearly demonstrates the fake “values” that the Kremlin brings along. The parishes of our Church, as well as the parishes of most religious organizations in the occupied Crimea, in the occupied parts of the East and South of Ukraine, are under constant pressure. If you are not loyal to the Russian state, then you will encounter its counteraction and persecution.

The way the Kremlin began to restrict the freedom of religion along with other freedoms is a striking example of an early warning about the aggravation of human rights. And we all see the bloody consequences of such policy.

Like in the times of communist persecution of religion in the Soviet Union, now in Putin’s Russia, the uncompromising attention of the international community to the freedom of religion is essential. Monitoring, providing publicity to specific facts of crimes against freedom, constant requiring the authorities to comply with universally recognized legal standards – is what we can and must do together.

Thank you for your attention and I’m asking you all to continue praying for peace and freedom for Ukraine!
